The Air Between examines the thin line between personal and collective narratives, their formation, and their mutual influence through abstract paintings and ceramics. Maria Loram’s installation A Brief Convocation anthropomorphizes the multitude of vessels, alluding to the collective nature of the self. Other larger pieces explore the passage of time and culture through the timeless materiality of the Earth. Clay Ngo’s installation Of Purses looks at the object of the purse as a coping mechanism in identifying the self. Tammy Chang’s paintings confront her personal narrative of assimilation as a Taiwanese-American, raising a broader issue of belonging. She challenges the authenticity of symbols of inherited meaning and identification with the dominant culture for success or safety. Each artist explores the spectrum of the self within the collective, claiming control of their own narratives.
