In Performance: Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste’s ‘Unmarked Car (S.L.A.B.), pt. 2’
Please join us for a performance by Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste on the occasion of ‘Jason Rhoades. DRIVE’: an exhibition that features cars as readymade works of art. Toussaint-Baptiste’s mobile sculpture is a decommissioned Ford Crown Victoria—with tinted windows and a carceral security barrier—that has been transformed from an object of surveillance and violence into a low-frequency musical instrument and amplifier of Black cultural practice. Audience members may experience the event from outside of the vehicle or in the driver’s seat. A conversation with the artist will follow.

About Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste
Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste is a New York-based artist, composer, and performer. His work considers notions of errant relations that thrive across subjectivities. Toussaint-Baptiste was a 2017 artist in residence at Issue Project Room and received a Bessie Award in 2018 for Outstanding Music Composition and Sound Design. He is represented by Martos Gallery (New York). He has presented visual and performance work at MoMA PS1 (New York); Performance Space New York; the Brooklyn Museum; the Kitchen (New York); Issue Project Room (New York); the Studio Museum in Harlem; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Toussaint-Baptiste is a founding member of the performance collective Wildcat! and frequently collaborates with performers and visual artists, including Will Rawls, Yanira Castro/a canary torsi, Tiona Nekkia McClodden, Jaamil Olawale Kosoko, and André M. Zachery. Toussaint-Baptiste holds an MFA from Brooklyn College’s Performance and Interactive Media Arts program.
About ‘Jason Rhoades. DRIVE’
Since 27 February, Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles has dedicated an entire gallery at its Downtown LA location to a yearlong exploration of Rhoades’ art via the subject of cars and car culture. ‘Jason Rhoades. DRIVE’ will unfold over a series of thematic iterations, an ever-changing exhibition of Rhoades’ sculptures, drawings, videos and multiples—enriched by archival materials, public programs and contemporary perspectives.
