KEEP A' LIVIN': Kathya Alexander's Novel Reading and Book Signing

COMING TO ARKANSAS - Nxt Thrsdy in association with ThatTyrone presents Kathya Alexander’s Novel Reading and Book Tour in support of the debut novel - KEEP A’ LIVIN’ coming to Arkansas, May 6 - 12, 2024. The six-day tour includes FREE novel readings and book signings, book pop-ups, special staged reading with local actress Kalondra Vaughns and private events, held throughout Little Rock and North Little Rock: DEBUT NOVEL | NOVEL-IN-VERSE - Aunt Lute Books announced the publication of Kathya Alexander’s debut novel, Keep A' Livin'. This novel-in-verse is a coming of age tale set during the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century. Readers will follow 12-year old Mandy and her mother, Belle, as they both experience the extraordinary events of the Civil Rights Movement, finding strength, fearlessness, and faith along the way. This beautifully lyrical novel will stick with you.  KATHYA ALEXANDER | AUTHOR - Kathya Alexander is an author, playwright, storyteller, and teaching artist. She was a Writer-in-Residence at Hedgebrook Writer’s Retreat and won the Fringe First Award for Black to My Roots: African American Tales from the Head and the Heart in Edinburgh, Scotland. She has been published in The Pitkin Review, Arkana Magazine, Pontoon Poetry, and in anthologies by the African American Writers Alliance and Raising Lily Ledbetter: Women Poets Occupy the Workplace. Though based in Seattle, it is important for Ms. Alexander that her first book tour be in Arkansas, the place where Kathya grew up, where many of her close family members still live and the setting of her debut novel. “I am so excited to be sharing it with my hometown of Little Rock, with people who love me and who have been waiting for this book pretty much all my life,” says Ms. Alexander. “Growing up in Arkansas as a child in the 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement greatly impacted my life and continues to influence my writing.” AN EXCITING NEW VOICE IN LITERATURE - “Not since The Color Purple has a book - KEEP A’ LIVIN’ by Kathya Alexander - come along that will open the minds and hearts of all who read it. If you were alive in the last century, and even if you didn't arrive until this century, this story will fill a major gap in your understanding of American history,” says Paula Coomer, author of Somebody Should Have Scolded The Girl, “They sure as hell didn't teach it to us in school, but some of us lived it. Kathya Alexander's writing is brilliant, evocative, and this is a book students of literature will be studying for a long, long time. Think Zora Neale Hurston. Think Toni Morrison. Think bell hooks.”  AUNT LUTE BOOKS | PUBLISHER - Aunt Lute Books is an intersectional, feminist press dedicated to publishing literature by those who have been traditionally underrepresented in or excluded by the literary canon. Core to Aunt Lute’s mission is the belief that the written word is critical to understanding and relating to each other as humans. www.auntlute.com All events are free | Space is limited | RSVP via [email protected] or (215) 913-1967
