The Polish Police: Collaboration in the Holocaust

Ina Levine Annual Lecture Public Program United States Holocaust Memorial 2016 Ina Levine Invitational Scholar Dr. Jan Grabowski will discuss his work on the Polish 'Blue' Police, which the Germans created shortly after their conquest of Poland. The “Blue” Police was responsible for the enforcement of various German regulations directed against Polish Jews, such as branding, restrictions on the use of public transportation, curfews, the registration of Jewish-owned property, the supervision of Jewish forced laborers, as well as the resettlement of Jews into ghettos. The organization numbered some 20,000 officers even from the early days of the occupation. This lecture will focus, however, on the role of the “Blue” Police during the 1942–43 period, when Polish officers took part in the brutal liquidation of ghettos in Poland. The Polish “Blue” Police sometimes acted under German orders while at other times it demonstrated a surprising degree of agency, and became one of the deadliest, non-German actors in the destruction of European Jewry.

Dr. Grabowski is professor of history at the University of Ottawa (Canada). A prolific author, Dr. Grabowski has produced more than 14 monographs and 60 articles in various languages. His most recent book, “Hunt for the Jews: Betrayal and Murder in German-Occupied Poland” (2014), won the 2014 Yad Vashem International Book Prize.

This event is made possible through the generous support of the William S. and Ina Levine Foundation.

A reception will follow the lecture.
