CELEBRATING ITALIAN AMERICAN HERITAGE
The City of Jacksonville Council passed Resolution 2024-754-A, designating October as Italian American Heritage Month in conjunction with Amici D ‘Italia Lodge #2791, the local chapter of the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America (OSDIA). This year's theme is "Giovanni da Verrazzano 1524-2024" in honor of the Italian explorer who charted the Atlantic coast of North America between the Carolinas and Newfoundland.
The U.S. Congress first recognized National Italian American Heritage and Culture Month in October 1989 to highlight Italian Americans' impact on arts and education, business and government, and scientific and technological advancements. During October, Jacksonville recognizes the thousands of Italian Americans in our city and celebrates their impact and contributions.
Amici D ‘Italia Lodge #2791 will celebrate Italian Heritage and Culture Month with a commemorative dinner on October 18, 2024, to honor those who preserve Italian traditions in our community. This local chapter is open all as social members, and to those of Italian descent, promoting cultural and philanthropic activities.
OSDIA promotes, enhances, and encourages the study of Italian heritage and culture. Our local chapter offers two scholarships to high school seniors of Italian descent who display academic excellence and leadership abilities. Applications are available for students from public and private high schools in Baker, Clay, Duval, Flagler, and Nassau counties.
