Race, Resistance & Forgiveness: A Conversation with "Mother Emanuel" author Kevin Sack

Join us at St. John’s Cathedral for a robust and timely discussion with Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Kevin Sack and Dean Kate Moorehead Carroll. Sunday, September 14 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Taliaferro Hall The Conversation will take place immediately following the 10:30 a.m. service. A meet and greet with the author and a book signing will follow the conversation. June 17, 2025, marked the tenth anniversary of the horrific, racially motivated attack that claimed the lives of nine members of Charleston’s historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church during a Wednesday night Bible study. The tragedy shook the nation and sparked hopes for a turning point in America’s struggle with racism—hopes that remain unfulfilled. In his new book, Mother Emanuel: Two Centuries of Race, Resistance, and Forgiveness in One Charleston Church, Sack delves into the profound history of Mother Emanuel, the origins of African Methodism, and the enduring impact of America’s racial legacy. Together with Dean Kate, he will reflect on the tragedy, the community’s extraordinary witness of forgiveness, and the broader call to truth, justice, and reconciliation. Books are available for purchase now at St. John’s Cathedral Bookstore and Gift Shop.
