Riley Children's Health Teddy Bear Drive

For young kids being treated at Riley Hospital for Children, a teddy bear is more than just a stuffed animal. It’s an important lifeline that not only provides comfort but allows patients to engage in pretend medical play. Research has shown this type of play reduces anxiety and increases a child’s knowledge of the types of treatment they might receive in the hospital. In celebration of Riley Children’s Health 100th Year and National Child Life Month, Riley Children’s Health is inviting community members to donate a brand-new teddy bear or other stuffed animal at The Children’s Museum from March 5 -March 29th. Teddy bears or medical play kits can also be purchased through the Riley Cheer Guild’s Amazon wish list and shipped directly to the hospital (https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/9EGJMG1YOP1P) The donated stuffed animals will be distributed to patients during a Teddy Bear Clinic at Riley Children’s Health in April. During the clinic, certified child life specialists will support children through play; the child will become the “doctor” and their teddy bear will become the “patient.” Its both an interactive and therapeutic opportunity for children to become more comfortable and confident when receiving medical treatment.
