The Klansman’s Son is an astonÂishÂing memÂoir of a childÂhood built on fear, and of breakÂing from a comÂmuÂniÂty of hate. Derek Black was raised to take over the white nationÂalÂist moveÂment in the UnitÂed States. Their father, Don Black, was a forÂmer Grand WizÂard in the Ku Klux Klan and startÂed StormÂfront — Derek built the kids’ page. David Duke, was also their close famÂiÂly friend and menÂtor. Racist hatred was all Derek knew. Then, while in colÂlege in 2013, Derek began engagÂing with stuÂdents of varÂiÂous reliÂgions and races. A JewÂish classÂmate, Matthew StevenÂson, bucked camÂpus presÂsure to ignore and isoÂlate Derek and invitÂed them to ShabÂbat dinÂner in his dorm. Derek began joinÂing every week for the conÂverÂsaÂtions and camaÂraderie. It set them on course to pubÂlicly renounce white nationÂalÂism and apolÂoÂgize for their actions. In 2016, as they watched the rise of DonÂald Trump, they immeÂdiÂateÂly recÂogÂnized what they were hearÂing — the spread and mainÂstreamÂing of the hate they had helped culÂtiÂvate — and they knew that they couldn’t stay silent. Derek traces a uniqueÂly insidÂer account of the rise of white nationÂalÂism, and how a child indocÂtriÂnatÂed with hate can become an anti-racist adult, comÂmitÂted to comÂbatÂting antisemitism.
R. Derek Black (they/she) is a docÂtorÂal canÂdiÂdate in hisÂtoÂry at the UniÂverÂsiÂty of ChicaÂgo. Since 2016, they have spoÂken to many audiÂences at uniÂverÂsiÂties, founÂdaÂtions, instiÂtuÂtions, museÂums, synÂaÂgogues, and churchÂes. They received the Elie Wiesel Award and a humanÂiÂtarÂiÂan award from the Anti-DefamaÂtion League. The Klansman’s Son is their first book.
Black will be interviewed by Suzanne Rothenberg, Associate Regional Director of ADL Midwest. Sponsored by ADL Midwest.
