Metalachi - LIVE!

Two of the best-loved - but wildly disparate - musical genres in the Houston area are metal and traditional mariachi. Only one LA band dares to bring them together, smashing through cultural barriers with one of the most wild and unique sounds to blast out of a speaker: Metalachi, and they are descending upon Richmond's Scotty's Saloon, Saturday, November 18, with special guest, Larry Lozano. METALACHI Born from a long night of music, Skrewball whiskey, and mariachi-loving metalheads, Metalachi has been entertaining audiences and wooing abuelas everywhere for over a decade. Hailing from Los Angeles, CA, the band has traveled across the US, Canada, and Mexico, performing everywhere from the smallest local bars to the largest parties, including Heavy Montreal, Megacruise, and Monsters of Rock Cruise. Metalachi's origins are shrouded in legend, but the idea reportedly came hen metal-head musicians who had also been playing mariachi since they were little kids were listening to Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" album. They combined the song "Iron Man" with the classic traditional tune "Jarabe Tapatio" (considered the national dance of Mexico, and better known the world over as the "Mexican Hat Dance") to create "Iron Tapatio." At a Quinceañera, on a whim they played the "Iron Tapatia," and it was a huge hit. They have since gathered a huge following that includes the band Avenged Sevenfold, punk-rocker Billy Idol, and Slayer's dummer, Dave Lumbardo, who joined them onstage for a performance of Slayer's "Raining Blood." It is a carnival of culture and sound and brilliant creativity. "They combine the humor of Steel Panther, the flamboyant of GWAR, and the eclectic rawness of Rob Zombie. There’s also a little dose of Spinal Tap and a hit of Cheech & Chong. The music is classic metal covers from artists like Metallica fused with classic mariachi by Vicente Fernandez and Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan. Their setlist is punctuated by comedic interludes and skits."- Phoenix New Times “Metalachi cleverly combined world-class musicianship with a great deal of showmanship… in the way they mix folk influences with world-class musical skills and rock. The band also puts on a great live show, and every member of the audience can’t help but leave the venue with a huge smile on their face.”- Nix Ulrich, Broken Photography LARRY LOZANO Larry began playing guitar and piano at age 5 and trumpet in stage bands at fourteen. He studied under Louis Gasca who at the time was playing for Santana. Later on Larry left school to perform all over San Antonio, Austin, and California playing all the top clubs. He recorded 3 origional c.d.'s, sold over 15000 copies, and even had the honor of opening up for Selena on more than one occasion, playing the Tejano Music Awards, and for the troops over seas.
