Hawaii Youth Symphony & Hawaii Symphony Orchestra Side-by-Side Concert
Hawaii Youth Symphony (HYS) and Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra (HSO) welcome the community to an extraordinary concert event, with students from HYS’ most advanced symphony program, Youth Symphony I, having the distinguished opportunity to perform alongside professional HSO musicians. The Side-by-Side concert will be held at the iconic Waikiki Shell on Thursday, October 26 from 7–8 p.m., offering free admission for guests to take in beautiful music beneath the stars. Under the direction of Maestro Joseph Stepec, HYS Director of Orchestral Activities and conductor Youth Symphony I, pieces will include "Conga Del Fuego Nuevo" composed by Arturo Marquez, "Hungarian March" by Hector Berlioz, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s "Capriccio Italian.”
Marking five years of Side-by-Side concerts, and the first since the pandemic, the October 2023 event further celebrates the deep connection between HSO and HYS. Many HSO musicians are HYS alumni, and several HYS faculty and staff members have played in the HSO. The organizations are also aligned in providing community access to musical experiences, as reflected in the spirit of the concert.
