The community is invited to take in a free “Side-by-Side” concert from Hawaii Youth Symphony (HYS) and Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra (HSO)—with students from Youth Symphony I, the most advanced symphony program at HYS, performing right alongside the musicians of HSO. Marking the second Side-by-Side concert of the season, the inspiring music event on Thursday, March 14 will usher in springtime with sweeping performances from seasoned professionals together with talented high school musicians.
Conducted by HSO Music Director, Dane Lam, and held at the stunning Waikiki Shell at 7 p.m., the one-hour concert’s dynamic lineup of pieces will include Gershwin’s “American in Paris,” Joe Hisaishi’s “Merry-Go-Round” from Howl’s Moving Castle, and an arrangement of the Berceuse & Finale from Igor Stravinsky’s monumental Firebird Suite. Three guest student saxophonists from the Hawaii Saxophone Foundation will also join the combined orchestra.
The March event builds on a five-year Side-by-Side tradition, with the popular and remarkable concert series an extension of a long-standing and multifaceted relationship between the two organizations. Notes Randy Wong, HYS President and CEO, former HYS student, and a professional bassist with HSO, “The Side-by-Side exemplifies the rich partnership between Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony and the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra, and is a testament to the ways that music brings our community together. This collaboration enables our students to gain a deeper understanding of what performing at that highest level requires. To see and hear them reaching that high bar—alongside these pros who are generously modeling their expertise—will offer an exhilarating experience for both our students and the audience.”
No tickets or reservations are required to attend the free HYS and HSO Side-by-Side concert on March 14, 2024. HYS annually serves more than 700 students ages 7-18, brought together from over 100 schools statewide. The non-profit provides programs for a variety of skill levels and musical interests, among them general music, jazz, string and band classes, summer intensives, and symphony orchestras—with Youth Symphony I among the finest youth symphonies in the country.
