The emerging R&B and neo-soul artist, UMI, has been creating waves in the music industry since her 2018 single, "Remember Me." Just as her name suggest, Umi, which translates to "ocean" in Japanese, her music reflects the depth and fluidity of the sea. As a mixed-race woman, UMI's unique Black and Japanese heritage profoundly influences her art, infusing it with elements of gospel music, J-Pop, Japanese Jazz, R&B, and soul, inspired by artists like Sade, Destiny’s Child, and Kobukuro from her childhood. Her music exudes a warm and soothing energy, providing a healing experience for her listeners. In her 2021 album, Introspection Reimagined, she pays tribute to the healing and peace she finds in music, extending these sentiments to her audience. UMI's personal journey with mental health played a pivotal role in her 15-track album, Forest in the City, released in 2022. This project was accompanied by a meditation tour, offering listeners an intimate glimpse into the artist's inner world, spanning from her initial growth to her present self. She intentionally crafts music that defies convention, aiming to reshape the paradigm and allow listeners to truly resonate with the depths of her soul's expression. UMI has continued to combine meditation and healing with her musical art, hosting various soundbath/healing creating a truly unique and tight-knit community amongst her fans. In December 2023, she released viral single, “wherever u r” with “V” of BTS, and less than a month later, dropped an EP, “talking to the wind.”
