Hawaii Youth Symphony Jazz Side-by-Side Concert

Hawaii Youth Symphony (HYS) has partnered with Ohana Jazz and the Musicians’ Association of Hawaii to provide another opportunity for audiences to experience the collaboration between professional and youth ensembles in a Jazz Side-by-Side concert on Thursday, November 30 from 6-8 p.m. at Studio 909. Building on the success of October’s Side-by-Side concert featuring musicians from HYS and Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, the Jazz Side-by-Side provides young aspiring musicians with the invaluable experience of performing alongside masterful improvisors and the opportunity to learn about the profession of music. HYS Jazz was established in 2018 with the goal of allowing music students to explore beyond classical music. The program is led by HYS Jazz Director Dean Taba with support from faculty members Noel Okimoto and Ryan Howe. The program is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to play as a rhythm section, accompany others and improvise. HYS also exposes students to the entrepreneurial aspects of pursuing music professionally or working in the music industry by providing them with access to audio engineers, professional musicians and music business gurus. Admission to the Jazz Side-by-Side is $10 at the door and guests are invited to bring their own food and beverages to enjoy during the performance.
