Take a virtual trip to Lehua Island, a closed seabird sanctuary 19 miles west of Kauaʻi and just north of Niʻihau. Dr. Josh Atwood (Division of Forestry & Wildlife) will guide attendees through a 360 ̊ field trip filled with on-island interviews from the Kauaʻi Endangered Seabird Recovery Project. The trip will show the tools and strategies used to protect native seabirds and will tell the story of how invasive rats and rabbits were removed from Lehua to restore the island's seabird habitat. Following the guided field trip presentation, attendees can use a large touch screen to navigate across Lehua themselves, and can use a virtual reality headset to step inside 360 ̊ videos taken on Lehua. This talk is part of the Year of Our Coastal Kuleana, a year-long celebration of Hawaiʻi’s coasts. Learn more at dlnr.hawaii.gov/coasts.
