Auditions at Kumu Kahua Theatre for production of “Outlandish”

KUMU KAHUA THEATRE ANNOUNCES AUDITION CALL FOR HEARTWARMING PERIOD PLAY OUTLANDISH Audition dates set for September 7 and 8, with play to premiere in November 2025 WHAT: Calling local actors! Kumu Kahua Theatre is holding auditions for its next production in the dynamic, female-forward 55th Season with Outlandish. Inspired by the trailblazing Victorian travel writer Isabella Bird’s Visit to Hilo, and her encounter with King of Hawai‘i Lunalilo, Outlandish will make its world premiere at the historic downtown theatre that’s been “keeping it local since 1971”. The script by Eric Anderson—following these two unusual people as they get to know each other in ways that challenge and surprise them both—will be brought to the stage by Director Reyn Afaga. Auditions are set for September 7 and 8 at 6 p.m. for the following roles: · Lunalilo—Male, Hawaiian, late 30s, historically noted for his attractiveness and charisma, he is bright, energetic—and doomed. · Isabella—Female, White, late 30s to early 40s, Scottish, smart, adventuresome, inquiring, with a low pitched voice in either a Yorkshire or Scottish accent. · Lucinda—Female, White, 30s-40s, comfortable, complacent, uninquiring, pretty lovable. · Anna—Female, White, 20s, Yankee stock, disillusioned, somewhat mysterious, educated, seeks the truth of every situation, and is never emotionally attended to. · Hattie— Female, White, 30s-40s, conservative religious, dogmatic, gossip, energetic, “old-maidish, tiresome. · Deborah—Female, 20s Hawaiian, young (late teen), pretty, clever, positive, pleasant manners, emotionally just a little over the top. · Actors who can additionally play musical instruments are also sought by the director. Set in 1873, Outlandish follows travel writer Isabella Bird as she throws herself into the Hilo community with enthusiasm and occasional blunders at the same time the new King of Hawai‘i, Lunalilo, coincidentally stops in Hilo on his inaugural tour through the Islands. Miss Bird and Lunalilo meet at a party given in his honor by the local sheriff and his wife in a play about changes, give and take, that occur on a Hilo lāna‘i—and with reverberations that may echo throughout the whole 19th century world, as well as within the warm confines of the human heart. WHEN/WHERE: Kumu Kahua Theatre, located at 46 Merchant Street, Honolulu. · Auditions will be held Sunday, September 7 and Monday, September 8 at 6 p.m. · Outlandish is on stage from November 6 -December 7, 2025 with the potential for an extended run. Shows are Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. For further information, contact (808) 536-4441 or visit www.kumukahua.org
