Kai Gaspar is a kānaka ʻōiwi poet and teacher from Hōnaunau. Kai is the author of the acclaimed poetic memoir ‘Ulu’, published by Hoʻolana Publishing in 2023. ‘Ulu’ was featured by Honolulu Magazine as one of "5 Books Local Authors Couldn’t Get Enough of in 2023" with Hawai‘i State Poet Laureate Brandy Nālani McDougall writing, “What Gaspar offers here is a profound story of the deep and possessive mana of Hōnaunau, of a young māhū growing and earning the knowledge of healing and ‘āina, and how we can all become pu‘uhonua—beautiful, compassionate and strong, not only in spite of whatever we survive, but also because of it." His works have previously been published in Mauri Ola Contemporary Polynesian Poems in English / Whetu Moana II, Tinfish, Yellow Medicine Review, Hawai‘i Review and elsewhere.
Richard Hamasaki, celebrated poet, independent filmmaker, producer and creative collaborator of ʻElepaio Press and Wansalawata Productions, is the author of ‘From the Spider Bone Diaries, Poems and Songs’ and the poetry chapbooks, ‘7 Poems/8 Photographs’ (with brother Mark Hamasaki), and ‘virtual fleality’.
Donovan Kūhiō Colleps is a Kānaka Maoli poet and editor. He is the author of ‘Proposed Additions’ (Tinfish Press, 2014). His recent work has appeared in ‘When The Light Of The World Was Subdued, Our Songs Came Through’ (W.W. Norton), ‘The Slowdown’ (American Public Media), ‘Poetry’, (Poetry Foundation), ‘Indigenous Pacific Islander Eco-Literatures’ (University of Hawai'i Press), and ‘Poem-a-Day’ (poets.org).
Lisa Linn Kanae was born and raised in Kapahulu, Oʻahu , and is of Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino descent. She is the author of the chapbook ‘Sista Tongue’ (2003), a hybrid work that collages poetry and prose, English and Pidgin, and weaves together personal narrative and the social history of Pidgin. Lisa is also the author of the short story collection ‘Islands Linked by Ocean’ (2009).
