Kamehameha Day has long been a celebration of leadership, legacy, and the enduring spirit of Hawaiʻi.
In the early years of the holiday, alongside parades and cultural gatherings honoring King Kamehameha I, horse racing became a featured tradition. Communities would gather to watch the races, celebrating the strength, speed, and deep connection between people and horses—a reflection of the equestrian culture that began during Kamehameha’s reign when horses were first introduced to the islands.
Over time, those early races helped shape Hawaiʻi’s rich ranching and horseback traditions, including the paniolo culture that still thrives today.
That same spirit continues in a new form—on the polo field. Today’s game carries forward the legacy of horsemanship, competition, and celebration of the land and sea that define Hawaiʻi.
From historic Kamehameha Day races to modern polo by the ocean, this tradition is still in motion.
Two exciting matchups take the field as Paniolo Bar faces PAL and Equus takes on PAC. At halftime, a special horse race pays tribute to King Kamehameha, honoring the deep equestrian legacy behind the holiday.
Fuel up with Thai Express and Graze Elevated, then cool down with Hawaiian Reign Shaved Ice. Also on-site: Sacred Falls Honey and Christie’s Creations. Live music all day from 11th Hour Rock Band.
