Okinawa’s Fight For Safe Water Captured in Honolulu Film Debut & Public Forum
The exposé film on the water contamination crisis in Okinawa, Nuchi nu Miji: Okinawa”s Water of Life, debuts in Honolulu with co-director and acclaimed British investigative journalist Jon Mitchell on February 25, 2023, 6:00-8:30 pm at the Church of Crossroads (1212 University Ave.). Following the free to public film will be a community forum with Jon Mitchell joined with local water protectors Healani Sonoda-Pale (O`ahu Water Protectors, Ka Lāhu)), Erwin Kawata and others from the Honolulu Board of Water Supply and Chihiro Komine (Hawai`i Okinawa Alliance co-founder) as Hawai`i grapples with its own legacy of military water contamination, including “Forever Chemical” spillage and ongoing threat from the Red Hill naval fuel tanks at Kapūkaki.
While the months old film cannot be broadcast as it tours film circuits, the public forum will be livestreamed on the HOA facebook page.

Nuchi nu Miji features the Okinawan struggle for justice and safe water in one of the worst environmental catastrophes in modern Japan history. Since 2016, the drinking water and blood of 450,000 Okinawan natives has been contaminated by US military PFAS forever chemicals, that neither the Japan and US governments will confront or resolve. Produced by Okinawa TV station, Ryūkyū Asahi Broadcasting, this 72-minute documentary exposes what is has been happening in Okinawa by design in Tokyo and Washington, and is essential viewing for all those interested in environmental justice and indigenous water struggles.
Hawai`i and Ryūkyū, better known now as Okinawa, have much in common, including: illegally overthrown island kingdoms, faced cultural genocide, endangered rich biodiversity and significant amounts of land currently occupied by US military bases that our poisoning their true source of security and life: their water.
