Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives is hosting “Kupu Hou Ka Lauaʻe [The Lauaʻe Fern Sprouts Anew]” a special night of oli, mele, and hula celebrating the 20th anniversary of the ʻuniki of Papa Lauaʻe from Kumu John Keola Lake. ʻUniki is a process that trains master dancers.
Hālau Mele is a featured Hālau and has presented many times during the Hawaiian Mission Houses’ Mele Series which lasted from 2012 to 2019. Kumu Sam ʻOhu Gon, Kumu Māhealani Wong, and others steered that series as members of the planning and advisory committee.
“This will be a night to celebrate oli, hula, mele, and memories of Kumu John Keolamakaʻāinana Lake, who directed us, his graduates, to hoʻomau and hoʻoulu – to continue his legacy and to make it grow. This we do by dedicating our hālau to learning and appreciating the huge richness that Hawaiian culture, language and arts can provide to all of us today” Nā Kumu of Hālau Mele -- Māhealani Wong and Sam ʻOhu Gon.
The event will be Saturday February 25, 2023 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.
Tickets are $40 per person and are available at the Hawaiian Mission Houses’ website www.missionhouses.org. The ticket price will benefit Hawaiian Mission Houses’ education programs and Hālau Mele.
