Raging Waters - The Flood of 1955

This summer, the Unionville Museum invites the community to experience a powerful new exhibit, Raging Waters: The Flood of 1955, which opens August 17. This commemorative installation marks the 70th anniversary of one of the most devastating natural disasters to strike Unionville and the Farmington Valley in the past century. The exhibit offers an immersive look into the catastrophic events that unfolded in 1955, paying tribute to heroic first responders and the resilience and determination of Unionville’s residents. Learn the story of that fateful day and its aftermath, view never-before-seen photographs, and hear oral histories from survivors. The exhibit also includes how families can prepare for natural disasters, kids’ activities, and a panel discussion and walking tours planned for this fall. Raging Waters portrays a community at its most vulnerable and most courageous. Attendees are encouraged to share their personal memories of the 1955 flood, a defining moment that resonated far beyond Unionville’s borders. The museum will host an opening day reception Sunday, August 17, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Refreshments will be served and a special gallery talk will begin at 3:00 PM. For more information, visit the Museum’s website at unionvillemuseum.org or call (860) 673-2231.
