On September 30, Connecticut will observe a day of Military Suicide Awareness and Remembrance, honoring the courage, dedication, and humanity of our veterans and service members. This day highlights the mental health challenges some service members face, including PTSD and trauma, and calls us to respond with compassion, understanding and care. This day of recognition honors Command Sergeant Major Gary F. Sirois of Plainville, CT - a devoted soldier, inspiring leader and loving father - whose life ended far too soon. We remember him for his service, his leadership, and the positive impact he had on those around him. His life underscores the importance of community, connection, and guidance for those who may be carrying unseen burdens. The proclamation issued by the State of Connecticut underscores the state’s commitment to raising awareness, acknowledging the sacrifices of veterans and service members, and ensuring they receive the attention and care they deserve. We invite veterans, families, service members and others to join us on September 30 in remembering those we have lost, standing with those who are struggling, and seek to inspire hope, resilience, and connection. A message to every veteran and service member: You are not a burden. You are never alone. Your life matters. YOU MATTER. We honor your service, and we stand with you—always.
