'Bone Appetite


‘Bone Appetit  During its current season, the Holyoke Civic Symphony, “The Brass Menagerie“ brass instruments guest soloists have performed on tuba, horn, and trumpet.. Now the trombone is featured in the season finale, ‘‘ ‘Bone Appetit” Hear the vibrant trombone sounds that Hector Berlioz once called the “true head of the family of brasses... it possesses nobility and grandeur ...serious and powerful tones of sublime musical poetry, from religious, calm. and imposing accents to savage orgiastic outburst.”  The concert is Sunday May 5th, 3:00 pm and it is also the annual  fundraiser for the orchestra (the other season concerts were free) ; $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. The concert’s powerful opening performance will be Saint-Saëns Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah. Featured guest trombone soloist Matthew Russo will perform with the orchestra Launy Grondahl’s Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra. Matthew Russo began playing trombone in high school; by the time he enrolled in college he realized the “incredible versatility” of the instrument. “My goal is to demonstrate the its vast color palette... that someone in the audience will say, “Wow, I never knew the trombone could do that.” Allen Molineux’s Zapateado the winner of the 2024 Holyoke Civic Symphony Composition Competition. Molineux is professor of music and department chair at Claflin University in Orangeberg, South Carolina.  Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird will also be performed.  The Russian composer and conductor’s  piece blends thewizardry Stravinsky learned as a student of Rimsky-Korsakov with the vitality of Russian folk music to yield a dazzling evocative atmosphere.
