Taylor Mali in Performance


“Taylor Mali is a ranting comic showman and literary provocateur.” —The New York Times “To watch Mali is to watch a full-body poetic assault—with humor his central weapon.” —The Portland Phoenix A stand-out performer who emerged from the poetry slam movement, TAYLOR MALI has appeared in the HBO series “Def Poetry Jam,” Slam Planet, SlamNation, and the Peabody Award-winning “Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry.” Mali has performed with such poet icons as Billy Collins and Allen Ginsberg, along with many other prominent poets, and is a four-time National Poetry Slam champion. He is perhaps best known for his viral YouTube performance of “What Teachers Make.” Mali is also the author of four collections of poetry and a chapbook, The Whetting Stone, which won the 2017 Rattle Chapbook Prize. His titles will be available for purchase on-site at the event through the Curious Cat Bookshop. DOORS OPEN AT 7PM with LIVE MUSIC When you arrive, you can enjoy explorng the mural exhibit as well as the music by the Ed Fast Trio. Take some time to view the mural from all three levels, mingle, and have a drink from the cash bar. Small menu by Cafe 38 will also be available. Located in a renovated mill, the American Mural Project (AMP ) offers an artsy club atmosphere like no other. Its centerpiece is the incredible indoor mural—120 feet long and five stories high—that celebrates American workers on a grand scale. With the mural as the backdrop to the show and three tiers for viewing and mingling, attendees have an extraordinary experience that fuses spoken word performance with collaborative art.
