Dickinson College to Host Love Your Body Week Keynote Speaker Sonalee Rashatwar
Sonalee Rashatwar (they/he), an award-winning clinical social worker and sex therapist will examine body positivity through the framework of intersectionality and the racist origins of fatphobia during a keynote lecture for Dickinson’s Love Your Body Week. “Body Positivity and the Fall of Western Civilization,” will take place Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium, 360 W. Louther St. The event is free and open to the public.
Rashatwar will trace the history and evolution of the fat liberation movement, particularly relating to economic systems in the West. They will discuss how the “commodification of body positivity” by capitalist markets has affected the body positivity movement. The talk will look at how incorporating the principles of socialism can create a more equitable society and connect these ideals to the radical roots of fat liberation, paving the way for the movement’s future.
Rashatwar is a social worker, sex therapist, adjunct lecturer and community activist engaged in the field of fat liberation, specifically examining how body size and image relates to topics including race, disability, colonization, sexuality and more. Known from their Instagram account, thefatsextherapist, Rashatwar is the co-owner of the Radical Therapy Center in Philadelphia where they specialize in treating sexual trauma, racial or immigrant trauma and South Asian family abuse. They have been featured in media including HBO and New York Magazine, and they have presented at institutions including Princeton University and the American Association of Sexuality.
