38th Annual Grand Sousa Concert

More than 70 musicians from across south central Pennsylvania will join to celebrate American music, our country’s 250th birthday, and the legacy of composer and band leader John Philip Sousa at the 38th Annual Grand Sousa Concert on Sunday, August 2, at 6:30 p.m. at the Carlisle Theatre, 40 W. High St., Carlisle. The concert is free and open to the public. This year’s Grand Sousa Concert is an America 250PA Cumberland County event funded, in part, by the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation. The concert represents a contemporary interpretation of the style and content of performances by Sousa and his world-renowned concert band. Selections will include Sousa’s “George Washington Bicentennial March” and “Waltzes from El Capitan”; “Fantasy on Yankee Doodle” by Mark Williams; “Rhythms and Riffs” by Brian Balmages; and “Salute to the Armed Forces,” arranged by Jari Villaneuva. This year’s Grand Sousa Concert Band will be led by Guest Conductor David Knott, a professional percussionist, music educator and educational leadership advocate. Mr. Knott directs and coordinates Middle Division Band activities at Milton Hershey School, and is the Assistant Conductor of the Hershey Symphony, as well as the Director of the Carlisle Brass Band. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in percussion performance from Michigan State University. Vocalist Julie Knott will be featured as the guest soloist, performing “Habanera” from George Bizet’s opera “Carmen” (arranged by Fergal Carrol) and Sousa’s “The Goose Girl Song.” A Central Pennsylvania native, Ms. Knott is a performer and researcher of Renaissance and Baroque vocal music. She is based in Baltimore and is a graduate of the Penn State University and the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University.
