An Eye to Color Art Workshop

The primary focus of this 3-day in-classroom workshop with Cynthia Rosen will be on color. While Cynthia is known as a palette knife painter and will give a knife demo, the aim of the workshop is to help people find their own visual voice. What separates you from your fellow painters, what are your particular skills and strengths from which to grow? Medium is of choice as the overall goal is to improve one’s creation of quality images. While you may learn to better apply your medium, that is secondary. This is not a medium specific technical skill based workshop but rather geared to improving the quality of your image. The medium is just the tool with which we work to understand and create quality paintings. Cynthia will bring a limited supply of various medium for those who want to explore using different tools. Day 1 will start with the basic review of composition and the use of values in color. How we use composition to move the eye through a painting, engaging our viewer. How simple shapes create a composition and can create virtually any object. How values and colors play into a composition. On day one you will be limited to painting still lifes from life. In this process the instructor can best understand how you see and interpret what you see while pointing out strengths and weaknesses. Day 2 will focus on providing the understanding of color relationships, mixing colors and the difference between warm and cool cools. Color can be used in a variety of ways, from abstraction to impressionism to a more classically representational way. The demonstration will cover broken color versus blended color as we note the usage of warm and cool colors. On Day 2, you may work from photos which you bring, further investigate still lifes, or interpret images from art history as provided by instructor-provided images. Cynthia will quickly discuss the pitfalls that photographs presents to the painter and what to do to compensate for these. For those who want to paint plein air, they may work outside adjacent to the studio. I will do a plein air demonstration if desired. Day 3 will focus on perspective and our understanding of how the image presents, partly as a result of the use of perspective. I will quickly review both linear and atmospheric perspective guidelines as well as quickly illustrate proportions of the head if anyone wants to paint portraits from brought or provided images. Once again, people are free to paint their chosen image. While one demonstration will specifically address the difference between the use of the knife and brush for oils or acrylics, attendees are free to work however they wish. While not a prerequisite, knowledge of drawing will be helpful. The workshop is not really geared to rank beginners as the delivery of information will be fluid and ongoing.
