Enjoy a wonderful afternoon of Big Band classics and more on Sunday, Feb. 18, from 2-4 p.m. when the 20-member AVB Big Band takes the stage at the Riverside Ballroom, 1560 Main St. in Green Bay.
Whether you’re in the mood to listen, dance or enjoy time with friends or your sweetheart, plan to be at the Riverside for an afternoon of great music, which includes vocalist April Strom-Johnson making her third annual appearance with the AVB Big Band at Riverside Ballroom. She is renowned for her signature smooth style that makes everything she sings special.
The afternoon is graciously sponsored by Bellevue Family Dentistry.
Admission is at no charge, but donations will be accepted at the door to support the all-volunteer band’s continuing mission of providing quality entertainment in some of the community’s best entertainment venues.
The Riverside Ballroom features first-come first-serve table seating. The bar will be open. Doors open at 1 p.m.
This is the third year for the Sunday afternoon concert and dance by the AVB Big Band at the Riverside Ballroom.
The lively atmosphere has been a big hit, said Mike Ajango, director of the AVB Community Band, who will also take the baton for the Big Band concert.
“There’s plenty of opportunity at the concert for folks to get together with a group of friends to enjoy the music and take to the dance floor, all in the great historic setting of the Riverside Ballroom,” he said.
“April is very excited about some new tunes. Me too,” continued Ajango. “Some traditional Big Band and some not-so-traditional. Everything is very ‘danceable,’ so bring your dancing shoes!”
Some of the afternoon’s selections include “Vehicle,” “Reminiscin’,” “St. Louis Blues,” “Here’s That Rainy Day,” “Moon River,” “That Old Black Magic” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.”
There’s lots more on the “chart list,” said Ajango — you’ll have to come down to the Riverside Ballroom on Sunday, Feb. 18, to find out what they are!
Members of the AVB Big Band directed by Mike Ajango are:
Saxophones: Cindy Swain, Kellie Beno, Gary Hassel, Dave Thaldorf and Chuck Larscheid;
Trombones: Joe Wingerter, Linda Kelley, Mark Schroeder and Jerry Chenot;
Trumpets: Brent Hussin, Gene Burmeister, Tim Bader and Mike Smits;
Rhythm section: Glen Niessner, Thomas Killian, Paul Oleksy, Angela Stiles, Russ Nau and Josh Patchak.
The Riverside Ballroom Big Band concert is part of the 2023-2024 eight-concert series of the AVB Community Band. The band was founded 42 years ago as the Allouez Village Band.
After the Feb. 18 Big Band concert, remaining concert dates for the full 75-member AVB Community Band will be performed Mondays, March 18, April 15 and May 13, at 7 p.m. at the Ashwaubenon Performing Arts Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. Donations are accepted following the concerts.
