Award-winning author Warren Gerds and Lakewood-based wildlife artist Joan White will be present from 1 to 5 p.m. for “Book Signing – Plus” in front of the museum’s gift shop. They will offer programs at 2 and 4 p.m. exploring details of the fascinating creation of their book youth-oriented, “A Friendly Tree," featuring 170 animals.
White’s painting on wood that is seen on the book cover will be on display in the museum’s 79th Art Annual juried exhibition Oct. 19-Jan. 12.
“Youngsters enjoy finding all the animals that are woven into the art,” Gerds says. “Joan has included 170 critters in her images that help tell the story of the life of a special tree.”
With a wide following, White is known for her specialty in her work with wood. “It’s fun when people who visit my studio slow down and really look at my art because I do layer images within images and hide creatures in every painting,” White says.
The event is part of Neville Museum’s monthly Free Wednesday offering. Admission is free to Brown County residents during the extended hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
White will display a work in progress, a sketch book and her techniques. Gerds will display nine of his books on varied topics.
Because of White’s presence, the focus primarily will be on “A Friendly Tree.” Featured separately will be Gerds’ Pulitzer Prize candidate “Golden Tales of a Newsman” for its attention to chapters on White and, separately, the making of “A Friendly Tree.”
