Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. invites the community on a journey back to the days of vaudeville to the performance of “Gypsy.” Tickets are on sale now at abramstheater.com or by calling 920-826-5852. The show, directed by Ali Carlson, will be presented March 16-19 and 23-26 at the Nancy Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple St., Abrams. An Opening Night Gala exclusively for Spotlight Sponsors and 2023 season ticket holders will be held from 5-6:15 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at the theater.
“Gypsy” is the tale of an ambitious stage mother fighting for her daughters' success, while secretly yearning for her own. Set all across America in the 1920s and ‘30s, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born, Arthur Laurents' landmark show explores the world of two-bit show business with brass, humor, heart, and sophistication.
“What makes the show stand out is the fact that we have really two casts,” Carlson said. “One cast is the kids - and then those kids grow up! So, to see the cast really take on these characters at different ages is amazing.”
Carlson said that the dual-casting approach leads to one really remarkable scene.
“I don't want to give it away, but there is one particular scene that is extra special. It's when the kids become adults,” Carlson said.
Portraying the lead role, Mama Rose, is Teresa Aportela Sergott, a veteran actress who’s performed in shows at Evergreen Theater, Play-by-Play Theatre, and Theatre Z. This is her first show with Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc.
“What really makes this character stand out is how powerful she is. People will be blown away with Teresa’s portrayal of this iconic character on stage,” Carlson said.
The audience will recognize many of the songs from the show. The score of “Gypsy,” by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim, includes "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Let Me Entertain You," "Some People," "If Momma Was Married," "You Gotta Get A Gimmick," and "Together Wherever We Go."
“Gypsy” is presented by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Tams-Witmark LLC. Visit abramstheater.com or call the box office, 920-826-5852, to purchase tickets for “Gypsy,” season tickets for “Gypsy,” “Lustful Youth,” and “Chitty Wit mark Bang Wit mark,” and sponsorships: Silver ($100), Gold ($250), and Platinum ($500).
