Did you know that Chicago was once the epicenter of video game development? Classic games from Pac Man to Mortal Kombat all passed through the Windy City on their way to international successes. One company in particular became the symbol of 80s and 90s videogame dominance, Midway Games.
"Insert Coin" is the must-see documentary about the astronomical success and ultimate failure of Midway Games. It takes you on a journey through the history and culture of the 90s arcade scene, Chicago's place in gaming history, and the challenges and triumphs that have shaped its growth.
Through intimate interviews with industry leaders, game developers, and cultural figures, the film explores the incredible creativity and innovation of the small team of developers who worked out of the back of a factory in the Avondale area of Chicago.
Exploring the creation of games from "NBA Jam" to "Mortal Kombat," "Insert Coin" is a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of the cultural, economic, and social forces that have shaped their games, and the role Chicago has played in its development.
Following the screening will be a Q and A with Director Joshua Tsui, Eugene Jarvis (considered the Godfather of Video games with such games as Defender, Robotron, and Cruisin USA), George Petro (NARC, T2, Revolution X), and the voice of NBA Jam, Tim Kitzrow.
