The Singularity of Her, or Back to the AI Future
In 2013 director Spike Jonze released a film that depicted a fully imagined near future, and at its center was a romantic relationship between a human being and an AI. In the course of a decade, as AI systems improved dramatically, this subject matter went from speculative sci-fi to the stuff of serious news articles. Join us as we examine this provocative treatment not only of agentic AI, but also the tech Singularity.

Instructor Bio:
Martyn is a professor of religious studies at Lawrence University. Among other topics he teaches courses on religion and technology. He is an alderperson for the city of Appleton and founder of the Appleton Lyceum.
