Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) is one of the better-known Jesus films of the 20th century. As such, it raises fascinating questions about how movies attempt to portray Jesus in ways that are historically accurate while remaining compelling to modern audiences.
Join biblical scholar Kathleen Gallagher Elkins for a screening of the 1973 classic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. Dr. Gallagher Elkins will discuss religion, celebrity culture, race, and the ways that the gospels and other ancient texts are adapted for the screen.
Presenter: Kathleen Gallagher Elkins, PhD is a scholar of the New Testament and Early Christian history. She has been an acquisitions editor at Fortress Press for about a year. Before working for Fortress, she taught undergraduate and graduate students, including a decade as a tenured faculty member at a Catholic liberal arts college. She is also the author of Mary, Mother of Martyrs: How Motherhood Became Self-Sacrifice in Early Christianity (2018) and several articles and book chapters.
