AVB Community Band Veterans Concert

The AVB Community Band will celebrate our veterans and America during an inspiring evening of music titled “Love from Sea to Shining Sea” on Monday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at Bayport High School, 2710 Lineville Road, Green Bay (Howard). Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission to the concert is at no charge, but donations are accepted to help the band continue its important mission of “Music for a Lifetime.” The November concert is always one of the most popular and moving concerts of the AVB Community Band’s season. Members of American Legion Sullivan-Wallen Post 11 in Green Bay will be in attendance to help welcome guests and post the colors prior to the concert. The family-friendly concert is sponsored by Hansen Family Funeral and Cremation Services in Green Bay, a longtime supporter of the AVB Community Band. Mike Ajango is director of the 75-member AVB (All-Volunteer) Community Band. Paul Oleksy is associate director. The narrator for the concert is band member Bruce Deadman. Ajango selected the concert theme of “Love from Sea to Shining Sea” for a special reason. “There’s a lot going on in our country, but beneath all the media buzz is a foundation. We are more alike than different,” he said. “There are many, many things that connect us. That bonds us together as one nation that loves our country.” The concert serves as a big “thank you” to our veterans, he continued. “We wouldn't be the country we are today without the service of our veterans,” he said. “This is an opportunity to show our thanks and support for their service,” he said, noting that veterans will be honored as the concert concludes during a performance of “America’s Finest (A Musical Tribute to the Armed Forces).” The concert opens with the Posting of the Colors by American Legion Post 11, which has also Posted the Colors for decades before every Green Bay Packer home game. The band begins with “An American Fanfare” followed by the “The Great Locomotive Chase.” “God and Country Overture” is followed by a tip of the hat to America’s many varied communities in “Main Street Celebration.” “American Riversongs” closes out the first half and is a tribute to an earlier time when our rivers and other waterways were the lifelines of a growing nation. “Let Freedom Ring” begins the second half. This medley of familiar patriotic songs was first commissioned by the U.S. Air Force Band of Flight. The moving “Beyond the Horizon” is followed by Billy Joel’s famous “Rootbeer Rag,” featuring the band’s saxophone section. The Broadway-themed “Curtain Call” is a prelude to the evening’s highlight, the AVB Community Band’s salute to our veterans in “America’s Finest.” Members of the band will be in the lobby following the concert selling tickets for the chicken dinner that will follow the Big Band/Jazz Concert and Dance at the Riverside Ballroom on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. The Nov. 18 concert is the third of eight concerts during the band’s 43rd season.
