AVB Community Band Concert

An evening of great music awaits as the AVB Community Band performs its next concert "We Believe in Variety: Music is the Spice of Life!" on Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m. at the Ashwaubenon Performing Arts Center (PAC), 2391 S. Ridge Road in Ashwaubenon. Look forward to hearing everything from Broadway’s best to the “1812 Overture.” “As we all know, ‘variety is the spice of life,’ both in life and in music,” said Mike Ajango, director of the 75-member all-volunteer AVB Community Band. “For March, we will have variety! Love marches? Check! Love classics? Check! Love modern band music? Check! Love Broadway musicals? Check! All in one night, something for everyone.” Doors to the Ashwaubenon PAC open at 6 p.m. As always, there is no admission charge, but donations are accepted following the concert. We thank Schroeder’s Flowers in Allouez for sponsoring this evening of music. The associate director of the AVB Community Band is Paul Oleksy. Narrator for the evening is Bruce Deadman. The AVB Community Band opens the evening with the dynamic fanfare “Rise of the Firebird” by Steven Reineke. The evening will include two pieces by Robert Sheldon, who is considered one of the most prolific and popular concert band composers in the world. Sheldon’s “The Blue Ridge” celebrates the rich tradition of folk music handed down by families in America’s Blue Ridge Mountains and his “With Every Sunrise” will leave you uplifted and reflective. Selections from the Broadway and movie musical “Chicago!” will be performed, including “And All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango” and “Roxie.” “American Barndance” by Richard Saucedo features a new take on some familiar barn dance favorites. The AVB Community Band will also perform the iconic “The Liberty Bell” march by the great American composer, John Philip Sousa. One of the staples of the concert band repertoire is the “Second Suite for Military Band in F Major” by Gustav Holst. The band will perform Movement III., “Song of the Blacksmith,” and Movement IV., “Fantasia on the Dargason,” a fun-filled English folk dance. The concert concludes with the “1812 Overture” by Tchaikovsky and arranged for concert band by Mark Williams. The final two concerts of the 2022-2023 season will also be performed at the Ashwaubenon PAC. “We Believe in Passion: Music That Inspires the Soul” will be performed Monday, April 17, and “We Believe in Rock and Roll: Music for Movin’ and Groovin’” will be performed Monday, May 15. Doors open at 6 p.m. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Formerly known as the Allouez Village Band, the organization rebranded for its 40th anniversary season in 2021-2022 as the “All Volunteer Band” (AVB) to better reflect its membership from various communities in the area. For more information, about our concerts and opportunities to support the band through sponsorships, as an annual donor or by providing a legacy gift to help us continue our important mission of bringing “Music for a LIfetime” to the community, see avbcommunityband.org.
