“A Season of Love” is the theme of the 2024-2025 eight-concert season.
Doors at the Ashwaubenon PAC open at 6 p.m. The family-friendly concert begins at 7 p.m.
The concert is sponsored by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 224.
Admission is at no charge, with donations accepted before and after the concert, as well as during intermission, to help ensure the band can continue its mission of “Music for a Lifetime” for years to come.
The theme for the Sept. 16 concert is "Reel Love: Music from the Movies.”
“We have an exciting season planned,” said Mike Ajango, conductor of the 75-member AVB Community Band. “‘Love is in the air’ with Jordan Love taking the field for a big season, and we’ll be celebrating love through music this 43rd season.”
"Whether you love movie music, patriotic music, jazz or even symphonic music, we have you covered," he said, emphasizing that, after its summer break, the AVB Community Band is looking forward to performing once again.
“We invite all of our fans back for this great new season, and please bring some friends with you and introduce them to the fun you have at our concerts,” he said.
The associate conductor of the AVB Community Band is Paul Oleksy. The narrator for each concert is band member Bruce Deadman.
Here’s what the AVB Community Band has in store for you as we feature “Reel Love: Music from the Movies.”
The band opens with a medley featuring “Also Sprach Zarathustra” by Richard Strauss, known to many as the song from “2001: A Space Odyssey,” followed by music from “Mission Impossible” and “The Muppets.”
“John Williams in Concert” features a number of his famous works, including music from “Star Wars,” “E.T.” and “Jaws,” as well as a salute to the Olympics in “The Olympic Spirit” and the theme song of NBC News titled “The Mission Theme.”
Little did 5-year-old Irving Berlin know when he arrived at Ellis Island from Russia in 1893 that he would grow up to be known as one of America’s great composers.
We celebrate his music during “Tribute to Irving Berlin,” which includes “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Steppin’ Out with My Baby,” “This is the Army, Mr. Jones,” “Blue Skies” and more.
“Who’s That Masked Man?,” arranged by Jay Bocook, celebrates the generations of “masked men” who have made movie magic. Music will include “William Tell Overture,” “Theme from Spider Man,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “The Glory Days” and “Zorro’s Theme.”
“Hooray for Hollywood,” arranged by Warren Barker, begins the evening’s second half and includes movie favorites “Forty-Second Street,” “The High and the Mighty,” “As Time Goes By” and, of course, “Hooray for Hollywood.”
“Highlights from Star Trek Into Darkness,” the 2013 film, featuring Chris Pine as Captain. James T. Kirk, celebrates the music of not only that film but the familiar “Theme from Star Trek.”
The music for the Technicolor fantasy film “The Wizard of Oz” was composed by Harold Arlen and adapted by Milwaukee-born Herbert Stothart (who won the Academy Award for Best Original Score), with lyrics by Edgar "Yip" Harburg.
The AVB Community Band’s tribute to the iconic film is arranged by James Barnes and, of course, includes the Academy Award-winning Best Song “Over the Rainbow.”
The evening concludes with “Young Person’s Guide to John Williams,” a personal favorite of conductor Mike Ajango. The spirited piece, arranged by Jay Bocook, includes the “Prologue from Hook,” “Hedwig’s Theme” from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone,” “Theme from E.T.” and “Raiders March” from “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
"By the way,” said Ajango, “I hear that Jordan Love and the Packers are also planning a ‘Season of Love.’ Anytime Jordan wants to come to one of our concerts, just let me know. I’ll let him conduct a tune or two!"
Once again, the AVB Community Band will partner with the Ashwaubenon High School choral program at the Ashwaubenon PAC concerts as they fundraise by selling Seroogy’s candy bars in the lobby prior to concerts and during intermission.
AVB Community Band also accepts used musical instruments in good condition for use by area schoolchildren.
