The season title “To Be Dvořák” recalls the famous line in Shakespeare, “to be, or not to be,” and invites us to a year-long journey of discovering (or re-discovering) Dvořák through his own compositions as well as through his relations to other composers. Today’s program starts with Pohádka by Leos Janácek, a fellow Czech composer, continues with the Arpeggione by Franz Schubert, whom Dvořák deeply admired, and finishes with the F minor Piano Trio by Dvořák, the piece Dvořák said of “not one bar too many or too few.”
The ensemble includes Dominique Kim, principal flutist of the Grand Rapids Symphony; Grace Kim, assistant concertmaster of the Grand Rapids Symphony; Andrew Laven, assistant principal cellist of the Grand Rapids Symphony; and Sookkyung Cho, professor of piano at GVSU and curator of the GV Piano Chamber Music Series. We are fortunate to have world-class musicians in West Michigan, and invite you to join us for an afternoon of music by our favorite Czech composer, a fellow compatriot, and a lovely piece by Schubert, whom Dvorak greatly admired.
The concerts are free and open to the public.
