Free@3 Presents Pianist Jooyoung Kim

Ms. Kim returns to Holland as a perennial favorite artist of the Free@3 Chamber Music series with a versatile program of romantics and contemporaries. Her selections include works by Marion Bauer and Judith Lang Zaimont. Marion Bauer (1882-1955) was a composer of over 160 works, a writer, and a music critic. She was one of the most important American women composers of the first half of the twentieth century. A modernist composer who experimented with dissonance, serialism, and complex harmonies, Bauer also made strides for women through her musical scholarship that revived interest in female composers. Bauer studied music in New York and Europe before joining the faculty of New York University in 1926, where she taught composition and music history. She also began teaching at Juilliard in 1940 and lectured widely on music. Bauer’s compositions were alternately hailed and criticized for their complexity and modernist qualities. She edited the journal Musical Leader and published several books on music’s past and present for both musicians and general readers, highlighting often-overlooked female composers. She helped found the American Music Guild, the Society of American Women Composers, and the American Composers Alliance, among other organizations. Judith Lang Zaimont is internationally recognized for her music’s distinctive style, characterized by expressive strength and dynamism. A grantee of both National Endowments, winner of the 2015 The American Prize in Chamber Music Composition and a 2003 Aaron Copland Award winner, she has enjoyed a distinguished career as composer of over 100 works with performances by the Philadelphia Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Camerata Bern, Berlin and Czech Radio symphonies, and the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra. Her music is widely performed throughout the U.S. and Europe and has been recorded for the MSR Classics, Naxos, Navona, Koch Classics, Arabesque, Milken Family Foundation, Albany, Jeanne, Leonarda, Northeastern, and 4Tay labels. Her principal publishers are Subito Music, Galaxy/ ECS, Jeanné and Vivace. She is a distinguished teacher and pianist, and creator and editor-in-chief of the critically acclaimed book series The Musical Woman: An International Perspective. We end our program with Liszt's famous and extraordinarily difficult etude "La Campanella" which showcases Ms. Kim's virtuosic abilities. Pianist Jooyoung Kim, a native of South Korea, has been critically acclaimed on international stages for her dazzling technique, superb musicianship, and exquisite artistry. Fanfare and American Record Guide have hailed her as “richness of talent,” “charm, romance, and elegance,” and “exuberant and bold playing.” Since making her debut at the age of twelve as a soloist with the Korean Symphony Orchestra, Kim has presented numerous solo and chamber recitals in Korea, Japan, Germany, Spain, England, France, Portugal, Italy, Russia, and the United States. She has appeared as a soloist with many orchestras including the Korean Symphony Orchestra, Yonsei Sinfonietta, Yale University Symphony Orchestra, and the Ball State Symphony Orchestra. Kim, who holds degrees from Yonsei University, Universität der Künste Berlin, and Ball State University, currently serves on the piano faculty at Anderson University and Indiana University Kokomo. Prior to joining the faculty at AU and IUK, she held faculty positions at Indiana Wesleyan University, Indiana University East, and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She has also taught at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and UTRGV Summer Piano Camp. She released her solo CD on MSR Classics that is continuing to receive rave reviews. Her CD is available on MSR Classics, Amazon, Spotify, and iTunes. (For more information: www.jooyoungkimpiano.com). Free@3 is delighted to welcome her back to our concert series.
