Free@3 Presents IL DUO LYRICO
Free@3 presents Il Duo Lyrico, featuring celebrated cellist Nancy Steltmann and acclaimed pianist Robert Byrens, on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at 3:00pm. This concert promises an afternoon of lyrical beauty and musical excellence.
The duo will perform an engaging program that spans classical masterworks to beloved film and Broadway melodies. The afternoon opens with John Williams' hauntingly beautiful theme from Schindler's List, followed by Bizet's passionate Flower Song from Carmen and Dvořák's expressive Indian Lament. The program continues with Stephen Hough's arrangement of the timeless Londonderry Air, Rachmaninoff's sublime Vocalise, and Leonard Bernstein's moving "Somewhere" from West Side Story. The concert concludes with Edvard Grieg's dramatic Sonata in A minor for Cello and Piano, Op. 36.
Nancy Steltmann served as principal cellist of the Grand Rapids Symphony for thirty-one years, earning critical acclaim including praise from the Detroit Free Press for her "tender solos" and performances described as making "each note count." A Juilliard graduate who studied with legendary cellists Leonard Rose and Harvey Shapiro, Steltmann has performed at prestigious venues throughout the United States.
Robert Byrens, a highly regarded collaborative pianist and vocal coach, served as artist faculty at Grand Valley State University for thirty years. He has performed in master classes with renowned artists including Jessye Norman, Phyllis Curtin, and Elly Ameling, and served as rehearsal pianist and vocal coach for Opera Grand Rapids for twenty-five years.
In 2016, Steltmann and Byrens formed Il Duo Lyrico and have since recorded two CDs together: Music from the Opera and Timeless Souvenirs.
