What does the art of the past mean to the artist of the present? Brian Molanphy, artist, Dallas

Brian Molanphy's attention to flux, endurance, transgression, and history informs his art. As a bookmaker and baker, he learned to apprehend the world through containers. Coupled with the muck of paper pulp, printer’s ink, pastry cream, and bread dough, the idea of containment led to ceramics. In 2020–21, Molanphy was an Artist in Residence at Tainan National University of the Arts in Taiwan, and he has recently exhibited his work in Taipei, Taiwan, and at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas. Molanphy is professor and chair at the Meadows School of the Arts, SMU, Dallas
