Mischief Night Mysteries

Laurel Hill has its brave military heroes like George Gordon Meade, its uplifting reformers like Sarah Josepha Hale, and selfless philanthropists like Robert Carson. But what about the less than pure spirits and those that met unusual ends? The Civil War general whose discarded mistress wrote a tell-all memoir (including a nude self-portrait of the general), causing one newspaper to label him “a slayer of innocence and a robber of chastity”? The impoverished gentleman who, too proud to accept the charity of others, starved to death with donated food only a few feet away? The diplomat who may have died after drinking a poisoned cocktail, buried with his mother, who may have died after eating poisoned Bavarian cream custard? The final resting places of our more troubled souls — who died due to sin, scandal, suicide or other suspicious circumstances — will be among the many stops on our walking tour of Laurel Hill’s Mischief Night Mysteries. Embrace the Halloween season while listening to tales of the cemetery’s more risqué residents. Following the tour will be samplings of autumnal treats and cocktails in the Gatehouse. Bring your own flashlight or purchase one in the gift shop upon arrival.

This walking tour will take place on Wednesday, October 30 at 6:00 pm. Enter at Laurel Hill Cemetery’s Gatehouse entrance at 3822 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19132.

Ticket pricing is $20/General Admission, $18/Seniors (65 and Up), $18/Students with ID, $15/Members, $10/Youth (6-12), and $0/Child (5 and Under). Tickets can be purchased at the door or online.

A What to Expect email will be sent out to ticket holders before the event with information on weather, parking and amenities.

Tour Guides: Sarah Hamill and Thomas Keels
