Discover Philadelphia history as Historic Strawberry Mansion unveils a portrait of founder, lawyer, and abolitionist Judge William Lewis, notable for taking part in writing and passing the “Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery” in 1780. The painting will be presented to the public for the first time in generations, and a Storyteller from Historic Philadelphia Inc.’s award-winning Once Upon a Nation program will perform tales from Lewis’s era. The painting originally hung in the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Library. It was presented to the association in January 1825 and was the first portrait in its collection. It was painted by John Neagle after a Gilbert Stuart painting.
