In the early 20th century, when Raymond Pitcairn asked the artists and glass craftsmen he brought together in Bryn Athyn to reproduce portions of authentic medieval stained glass windows for Bryn Athyn Cathedral and Glencairn Museum, he was instrumental in reviving a centuries’ old skill set that many had thought was lost.
Today, dedicated men and women are studying the techniques of making glass, learning the old methods, adapting it to current equipment and demands, and sharing it with the rest of us as educators and inspired artisans—ensuring that the craft lives on.
This October, Glencairn Museum presents a special opportunity to study the castle’s medieval and 20th-century reproduction stained glass windows. Then see how a 21st-century glassblower duplicates the ancient skills to create the brilliant colors and clarity that have astounded visitors to European cathedrals—and to Bryn Athyn’s own beautiful buildings.
Learn all about it: book a tour of Glencairn’s collection led by Museum educators, including inspiring windows that are copies from France’s Chartres Cathedral and original windows from Soissons Cathedral, also in France. The guided tour begins with a live demonstration of glassblowing techniques by Historical Glassworks’ Jason Klein and Leslie Pierce.
This special tour series is available Tuesday through Friday at 2:30pm starting 10/18 through 10/30; and at 12:30pm on Saturday & Sunday, 10/19, 10/20 & 10/26. There is no Stained-Glass Tour Sunday, 10/27, during the Medieval Festival.
$15 per person, $12 for seniors/students with ID. Reservations strongly recommended: 267.502.2990.
