Love is the Message and Exhibit by Jamel Shabazz Opening Reception


The Trenton Downtown Association is excited to announce the third exhibit at BSB Gallery with the launch of, Love is the Message, featuring the work of renowned photographer Jamel Shabazz. A special opening reception with the artist is planned for August 25th from 5pm to 9pm.

Love is The Message will be on display from August 9, 2018 to September 22, 2018. Gallery hours are Thursday to Saturday from 11am to 5pm. The exhibit is presented in partnership with the Trenton Downtown Association and the African American Cultural Collaborative of Mercer County.

During the exhibit, three of Shabazz’s works will be auctioned off with all the proceeds donated to three local charities. The titled pieces to be auctioned are: “Church Ladies” 25 x 42; “Make Art Not War” 42 x 25; and “Four Shades of Grey” 25 x 42. These three special edition signed works are valued at $4,000.

Jamel Shabazz is best known for his iconic photographs of New York City during the 1980’s. A documentary, fashion, and street photographer, he has authored 8 monographs; Back in the days, The Last Sunday in June, A Time Before Crack, Seconds of My Life, The Remix, Represent, Pieces of a Man, and Sights in the City, and contributed to over three dozen other photography related books.

In his own words, Shabazz shared his inspiration in creating Love is the Message: “As a child coming of age in America during the turbulent 1960’s, my eyes have seen so many images of war and injustice… Fifty years later, America is still at war and injustice is still a pressing issue, especially in regards to communities of color.'
