Kids Table: Amaranth, Food of the Gods
Free Event | For ages 5 – 18 years old
Youth ages 5 to 18 are invited to celebrate and explore DÃa de los Muertos through the ancestral grain of amaranth. Led by artist and culture bearer Ome Tlaloc, participants will make their own no-bake amaranth bars while learning more about the cultural, spiritual, and culinary history of this ancient grain. Native to Central and South America, amaranth grows throughout the Paso del Norte region, though it is often considered a weed. Though consumed by Indigenous cultures across the Central and South American continent for thousands of years, Spanish colonizers discouraged its consumption due to its frequent presence in religious ceremonies, which they saw as a threat to the spread of Catholicism and the eucharist.
NOTE: Participation in this workshop is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants must be accompanied by an adult during the duration of the workshop.
