"Radioactive": Father Coughlin, American Fascism, and the Media
Creator of the "Radioactive" podcast and senior reporter for JTA, Andrew Lapin will present an engrossing lecture on the rise and fall of Father Coughlin. Lapin will explore how Coughlin manipulated the new media technology of the radio to spread his messages of antisemitic demagoguery across the country from the Great Depression up until the Holocaust. The presentation will cover the historical, cultural, and political factors that allowed him to become such a towering American media figure by spreading hate and conspiracy.
Lapin will dive into Father Coughlin's local impact and explore how he did this all from right here in the Detroit area as well as how Rabbi Fram (a Beth El rabbi at the time) was one of the early figures who aligned against him. The talk will also include clips from Father Coughlin's actual radio show.
