March is National Women’s History Month. The 2024 theme celebrates “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” With Writer, Director Barbara Neri and Producer Delores Flynn, we are a women led production and Unlocking Desire is told from a female protagonist’s perspective. The film will pass the Bechdel test: To pass a film must have dialogues between women that are about something other than a man! The dialogues in Unlocking Desire between women are about being a woman and relationships between women. Unlocking Desire will also pass GLAAD’s Vito Russo Test. For a film to pass, it must “contain a character who identifies as LGBTQ, that character must be tied to the plot in such a way that the character’s removal would have a significant effect." In Unlocking Desire, ‘Raoul' is that character.
This diversity is integral to the story and has been there since Unlocking Desire was a play produced in Detroit in 2011. And as the attached Press Release states: We are still casting and crewing and seek diversity behind the camera as well as in front of it! Actors and Crew are very welcome. We are still fundraising and welcome donors and investors to the event to learn more.
It is unusual to see a literary, Art House film like Unlocking Desire produced in the region. Unlocking Desire was announced at the Cannes Festival last May. Neri's script was awarded best screenplay at the 2017 Marfa Film Festival. More at unlockingdesire.com
