Shaping Detroit into a Modern City: Harley, Ellington & Day

In 1903, 19-year-old Alvin Harley began his Detroit architectural career in the offices of Albert Kahn. More than a century later, his legacy lives on through Harley Ellis Devereaux, with architectural offices in fourteen major U.S. cities. Join author, photographer, and architectural historian Dale A. Carlson for a look at the lives and careers of Detroit architects Alvin Harley, Harold S. Ellington, and Clarence E. Day—and some of the city’s most memorable buildings. Along the way, Carlson will take a closer look at some of their most significant commissions, including the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, the Horace A. Rackham Building in Detroit, the Nancy Brown Peace Carillon on Belle Isle, the Park-Shelton Apartments at Woodward & E. Kirby, and the Temple of Memories Mausoleum at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy.
