North Buxton Homecoming: The Power of Community

Join the Black Historic Sites Committee and the Detroit Historical Society for a special journey to the 2026 Buxton History & Genealogy Conference, the official kickoff to the 103rd Buxton Homecoming Celebration. This inspiring gathering explores the roots of freedom, family, and community in North Buxton, Ontario — a historic destination on the Underground Railroad and home to one of Canada’s most successful Black settlements. The journey will include a crossing over the new Gordie Howe International Bridge, offering a unique connection between Detroit and this important chapter of Black history. Presented by the Conference Committee in partnership with Huron University, the University of Windsor, and the Buxton National Historic Site & Museum, this day of learning and connection brings together historians, educators, genealogists, descendants, and community members to explore the enduring power of community. Featured speakers include Benita Law, Kenn Stanton, and Ken Johnson, along with a Buxton Education panel moderated by Dr. Funké Aladejebi. Established in 1849 by Reverend William King, the Elgin Settlement became a thriving community built by formerly enslaved individuals who sought freedom in Canada. Over generations, residents created farms, businesses, schools, churches, and lasting traditions that continue today through the descendants who preserve Buxton’s rich cultural heritage. The trip includes Round-trip bus transportation from the Detroit Historical Museum Parking at the Detroit Historical Museum Water and snacks during travel Catered lunch - Lunch will be catered by Ontario-based, award-winning Yaya’s Kitchen, with Chef Malvin and his team serving a curated African Diaspora tasting menu. Each course will be presented and narrated by the chefs, who will share information about the ingredients, their origins, and their cultural significance. (Vegetarian and vegan options available, please choose during registration) THIS EVENT REQUIRES A VALID PASSPORT OR ENHANCED DRIVER'S LICENSE TO CROSS THE U.S.-CANADA BORDER
