From 4:30-9:30 at Cranbrook Art Museum, join us for a Summer Solstice Celebration that features a variety of solar-themed performances and traditional solstice practices filled with joy and fun:
- Dominant Hand, the ambient noise duo, will present a participatory performance of their Solar Sounders, a synthesizer with a solar panel, tuned to different pitches that react to the power of the sun.
- Cranbrook Schools alumni will dance the may pole with Brookside’s early childhood music specialist.
- Jared Talaga and David Hurley, a duo of percussion and a buchula synthesizer will work with the sounds of the Triton Pools and Orpheus Fountain.
- The night will end with a sunset dance party featuring sun-themed music from the vinyl collection of Moondog Detroit, DJ'd by Nervous Recs.
- Jaro Farms will have dried floral crowns from locally grown spring flowers for sale, and food from Bombshell Treat Bar and Tacos Hernandez will be available.
- We will also have art-making activities, such as community weaving and sun-catcher making!
At Cranbrook Institute of Science, visitors can:
- Experiment with electricity
- Eat an edible insect
- Hold the hand of a T. Rex
- Solve engineering challenges
The sound system supporting the music for the evening at the Art Museum as well as the food vendors will be solar powered using a mobile unit provided by Solar Party Detroit, co-founded by alumna Ash Arder (CAA Fiber 2018).
All events are free and open to all!
