New Course: Being Jewish in America

The course will answer such questions as: What is the best response to antisemitism? Should our Jewishness play a role in how we vote? Am I an "American Jew" or a "Jewish American"? Is there even a difference? Does supporting Israel compromise my patriotism to America? The class will feature fascinating episodes in American Jewish history to find answers to these questions. Topics and Stories: 1. Freedom For All - George Washington's letter to the Jews of Rhode Island 2. The Jewish Vote - The dilemma Jews faced with Ulysses S. Grant and the elections of 1868 3. Antisemitism - Detroit hero Hank Greenberg lived in the same city as some of the country's most notorious antisemites, how did that shape his Jewish identity? 4. Light Onto The Nations - One of the unknown greats in Jewish history is Menasseh Ben Israel, whose efforts on behalf of the Jews of England provide tremendous insight into the role Jews should play on the world stage Classes are held on Sundays, beginning Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. and Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. in person at Bais Chabad of West Bloomfield, 5595 W. Maple Road and on Zoom. All are welcome to try out the first class at no charge. Course cost is $40; textbook is $30. Scholarships available thanks to the Mara Israel Scholarship Fund Find out more, and rsvp, at baischabad.com/americanjew. Questions? Call Rabbi Shneur Silberberg at (248) 855-6170
